Yesterday, at the benefit luncheon for the Trust for the National Mall (to which I wore my Alexander McQueen suit), I had a enjoyable and completely biased chat with a woman at my table about how the third times the charm when it comes to wives. In our experience, men who have been married twice before have learned how to treat a lady. So I am happy to welcome Nancy Shevell to our club. Shes been dating my almost-husband Paul McCartney for four years, and now they are engaged, according to People.com.

Im not jealous that Nancy snagged my almost-husband. I long ago realized that things would never have worked out between me and Paul M. due to his affinities for vegetarianism, pot and annoying thumb gestures, none of which I share. And I have good feelings about Nancy, who, unlike McCartneys second wife, Heather Mills, hasnt told any insane lies about how she used to be a top runway model-turned-Nobel prize nominee.

But, after all these years, Im still bitter whenever People breaks something big on the web. When I was the managing editor of People.com in 1999, the magazine peeps thought the website was a horrible parasite rather than a useful and necessary tool. It was like extracting impacted wisdom teeth to get any cooperation from the print side. Now print is half-dead and nearly every publication has a big web presence. Im always ahead of my fucking time! That can be a serious problem in business, actually. Outliers never get the credit theyre due. As someone once put it to me, it doesnt matter if youre two hours early or five minutes late to the train station either way, youre not on the train.
