The Met’s Savage Beauty exhibit pays homage to the work of British fashion designer, Alexander McQueen. Read More for a profile of this legendary designer and to learn about his extraordinary contributions to fashion.
A Brief Fashion History: McQueen began his career as a tailor, training on London’s famous Savile Row, a street known for its bespoke men’s tailoring. This beginning would eventually influence his work as a designer and make precision tailoring a respected element in Alexander McQueen designs.
In 1992, McQueen received his Masters in Fashion Design from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design (Cher went there too!).
In 1996, McQueen succeeded John Galliano as Creative Director of Givenchy in Paris, where he remained until beginning his own fashion house in 2001.
McQueen was named British Designer of the Year in 1996, 1997, 2001, and 2003. Also in 2003, CFDA named McQueen International Designer of the Year and the British Monarch awarded him CBE- Commander of the Order of the British Empire. What an honor!
Signature Designs: McQueen’s designs often focus on polarized opposites: life and death, light and dark, man and machine. These juxtapositions can be seen in collections throughout his career.
McQueen was also greatly influenced by his Scottish heritage, designing collections fashioned around detailed historical and sometimes autobiographical narratives. Pictured here with Sarah Jessica Parker, the designer delivered a memorable tartan moment at the Met Gala in 2006.
Savage Beauty: Savage Beauty, an exhibit on the work of Alexander McQueen, has been at The Metropolitan Museum of Art since May, and will remain on display through August 7th, 2011. If you’re going to be in New York, we definitely recommend checking it out! The exhibit consists of approximately 100 ensembles and 70 accessories from McQueen’s collections, including everything from his postgraduate collection in 1992 to his final runway presentation in 2010.

Celebrity Patrons: McQueen’s edgy yet beautiful creations are widely respected. Celebrities in love with the designer’s works include Sarah Jessica Parker, Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, and Kate.
Kate wore this McQueen design to the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in 2009.
We’re thrilled to see Alexander McQueen’s designs honored in the Savage Beauty Exhibit. The Met is honoring a true fashion revolutionary and artist.
“You’ve got to know the rules to break them. That’s what I’m here for, to demolish the rules but to keep the tradition.” –Alexander McQueen
